Overview of Candidate

Search Process

Head of School Search

Dear GSES Community,

Last month, we announced that our esteemed head of school, Jeanie Stark, is retiring at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. We can't thank Jeanie enough for what will be 11 years of visionary leadership, which included the completion of a successful capital campaign, a transformative remodel of our preschool facility, and a renewed commitment to early childhood excellence in our program. She has shaped GSES into the finest preschool in the city. We look forward to celebrating Jeanie more formally next year, and appreciate her support as we begin the process to find her replacement.

As part of the search to find Jeanie’s successor, the Board, in collaboration with the Vestry, has assembled a Search Committee tasked with finding a new leader for our school. This nine-member committee draws from many constituencies and stakeholders at Good Shepherd Episcopal School. I am honored to lead this committee and work alongside the Rev. Morgan Allen, Ann Burke, Katherine Goehring, Don Hammond, Kristen Hanson, Reg Hargrove, Andrew Stephens, and Robert Strauss. Catherine Granger, who was recently appointed president of the GSES Board, will work closely with the committee and me during this process as well.

Our initial step involved the selection of a search firm to aide us in a nationwide search to find the right candidate. Today, we are pleased to report that we have retained Carney Sandoe & Associates (CS&A) to be our partner in this effort. CS&A has a very sound reputation among the independent school community for its executive search work and collectively the firm has nearly forty years of experience placing leaders throughout the country and internationally.  Their understanding of leadership and tremendous reach in finding and recruiting good candidates is unmatched. Bob Windham, former Head of School at Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio will be the Senior Search Consultant who will work with us. Before joining CS&A, Bob served as Head of School at both Saint Mary’s Hall in San Antonio and Trinity Valley School in Fort Worth.  Prior to leading these schools for 15 years, he was a public school administrator in Arlington, Texas for over 30 years.  He has recently worked on the head of school searches at both St. Stephen’s and Khabele School in Austin. Bob is highly qualified to help us find the best possible individual to be our next leader, and we look forward to working with him.

Next month, you will receive an invitation from CS&A to participate in an independent survey where you’ll have the opportunity to provide your input on the next head of school. We very much want to know what you think is most important in the ideal candidate as we search, interview and ultimately select our next leader.

Following the survey, and over the next several months, Bob will begin an exhaustive process to select our next head of school. Some high-level details of this process are detailed in the attachment for those of you who are interested. But please know that our goal is for this process to be as open and transparent as possible so that all members of our school community are heard and informed.  We’ve created a page on the GSES website dedicated to the search to support this, and all communications will be posted there as well as sent directly to you via email. In the meantime, if you wish to suggest a candidate, you can contact Bob directly at

Thank you for your support as we celebrate and build on Jeanie Stark’s legacy in our search for the next leader of this great school.
